decided to teach others about finances. To provide others with the financial base he missed early on. To give others the advantage he squandered. Robert has always been very active in the community and served on several boards and served his community through his church. He was approached by several people and was asked to run for mayor. He turned down the offer for about 4 years. He finally decided he wanted to do more and help his city unite, grow, and improve the quality of life for its residents. Armed with his faith, experience, business and financial education, the support of his friends and family, he knew he could be successful. God had prepared him for this day and task. As he worked to improve the city, he also continued to pursue his real estate goals. He was approached by the Bellwether organization and continued to learn and progress. The lessons he learned he was able to and continues to share with others, including family, friends, and coworkers. Robert has been able to partner with Bellwether members and others to grow his business and real estate holdings and continue to help others. Robert took Dave Ramsey courses and became a Dave Ramsey financial coach to show others how to get out of and stay out of consumer debt to prepare themselves to advance their lives and careers. He used his life and business experience to teach others how to then use strategic debt to help themselves and families to improve their lives. That’s when Budget Management LLC was born. He continues to teach financial literacy as a free community service to improve the lives of others. Robert has 3 children, whom he has taught to help them to have a much better future. 2 of the 3 have heeded his words. When you help others get what they want you get what you want. Robert also has a passion to help the youth. He has been deeply involved with the schools in the community. He is a co-

founder of the Bay City ISD Education Foundation (BCISDED) which raised funds to assist teachers provide quality education and experiences for the students. Robert is also a Rotarian and a Lion. Both organizations help in the community in various ways. Becoming mayor has helped him to reach more people and share a message of unity, collaboration, and growth. Growth of the mind and a positive attitude are necessary to achieve one’s full potential. When one wakes up in the morning -first of all it’s a blessing-one must choose how one is going to face the day. One can be positive or negative, it is entirely up to you. I choose to be positive and share my smile and positivity with others. Dr. Wayne Dyer said, “When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change”. Change the way you look at starting your day. Change the way you look at your finances and how you view money. Money is a tool to help you and others. The more you have the more you can help. Money is also biblical. There are several scriptural quotes about money. Look at it properly. Having money shouldn’t be the goal. The goal should be what you can do with the money you have. How do you make it work for you by helping others? Robert’s mother, whom he referred to earlier in this article, was a very strong woman. She didn’t have much, but what she had she shared. She was a great teacher and an awesome mother and an example of morals and money. Learn from this article and others around you that have the correct moral compass and you will succeed in this life. Mr. Nelson, a business management graduate from LeTourneau University and Fairleigh Dickinson University, holds financier and financial coaching certificates.
