Amazon vs. NYT: What’s in a List? BY TANYA BROCKETT WITH KATHY KAYE

Being able to call yourself a bestselling author makes an impact. Yet, in my nearly two decades of working with existing and aspiring authors, many have said they only want to be a New York Times (NYT) bestselling author. For many years, I, too, held the traditional, ego-driven notion that only recognized bestsellers mattered (NYT, USA TODAY, Wall Street Journal, etc.). But times have changed. Technology is disrupting the publishing industry and its institutions. While the NYT continues to command respect from those of a certain age and era (like me), the rise of online platforms like Amazon has changed the publishing game significantly. The numbers speak for themselves: Amazon has asserted dominance with 200 million Prime subscribers and 2.4 billion monthly website visits. This shift in consumer behavior has significant implications for authors and their perception of success. Let’s explore a few changing dynamics and the growing significance of being a bestselling author on Amazon.
